You want remote… this is remote!
You’re probably wondering… where exactly is Kowanyama?
Kowanyama is a very remote Aboriginal community on the western side of Cape York, located along the Mitchell River and surrounded by incredible natural beauty. Life here moves differently. There’s no traffic, no shopping centres, and no rushing from place to place. Instead, you’ll find a strong sense of community, a short commute, spectacular sunsets, fishing spots locals love, and healthcare work that makes a valuable contribution to the community.
People who do well here are people who come with respect, patience, openness, and a willingness to listen and learn.
About the role
This is not your typical metro renal role.
We’re looking for an experienced and grounded Clinical Nurse Consultant – Renal, to support renal services within Kowanyama and surrounding communities. You’ll work closely with patients, families, and the broader multidisciplinary team to provide culturally safe, community-based care in a remote primary health care setting.
This role is about more than dialysis and clinical management. It’s about relationships, trust, education, advocacy, and helping people manage chronic disease closer to home and community.
You’ll play an important role supporting patients through their renal journey while working alongside a passionate remote health team who genuinely care about the community they support.
This role needs someone who:
- Has strong renal nursing knowledge and clinical confidence
- Can work independently and adapt in a remote setting
- Builds genuine relationships with patients, families, and community
- Is calm, practical, and solutions-focused
- Understands the importance of culturally safe healthcare
- Is happy to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Can support education, care coordination, and chronic disease management
- Has a sense of humour
Important to know
Remote health is very different to metro health. Things don’t always go perfectly to plan, resources can be limited, and flexibility is important. But the trade-off is meaningful work, genuine connection with community, and the opportunity to use your skills to your full scope!
Permanent Role – but let’s talk about what works for you
We know committing to a permanent remote role is a big decision, so we’re open to having a conversation about what this could look like: Talk to us about options.
What you get
Remote roles should come with real support, and this one does:
Before you apply
We’re going to be honest – before applying, spend some time looking into remote living. Remote communities are incredibly rewarding places to work, but they’re not for everyone, and that’s okay. We just want people to come with a realistic understanding of what remote life and work looks like.
