The Maternity Emergency Care (MEC) course is designed to equip non-midwife practitioners with the knowledge and practical skills needed to manage maternal and neonatal emergencies in remote and isolated settings.

Grounded in a wellness-oriented, woman-centred model of care, the course supports participants in recognising, responding to, and reflecting on both routine and non-routine maternal and neonatal outcomes. Emphasis is placed on improving confidence, collaboration, and clinical decision-making in environments where resources may be limited and timely response is critical. All content is aligned to the National Rural and Remote Nursing Generalist Framework Capabilities.

The CRANAplus Maternity Emergency Care course consists of the following components:

  • Online pre-course materials and assessments that must be completed one week before the workshop.
  • Attendance at a two day face-to-face workshop consisting of guided discussions, practical skill stations and context-based scenarios.
  • Two individual scenario based clinical skills assessments.
