Advanced Remote Emergency Care and Advanced Life Support (AREC & ALS)

Take your emergency care skills to the next level with the Advanced Remote Emergency Care (AREC) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) course—created by remote clinicians, for remote clinicians. Through interactive online learning and hands-on workshops, you’ll gain the confidence and expertise to lead resuscitation, make critical decisions, and deliver advanced care in the most challenging environments—all aligned with national standards.

What is the course about?

The Advanced Remote Emergency Care (AREC) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) course is designed explicitly by remote health clinicians for their peers. This course aims to:

1. Guide clinicians to manage the resuscitation of critically unwell people using ANZCOR guidelines in low-resource settings. The online pre-learning content and workshop activities emphasise technical and non-technical skills necessary for leading a team and making critical decisions as an ALS provider.

2. Build on participants’ emergency care experience to effectively manage the care of people in remote and isolated settings at risk of clinical deterioration. The online pre-learning content and workshop activities focus on leadership and advanced targeted assessments needed to form a clinical impression, commence treatment, or escalate to specialised care centres.

All content is aligned to the National Rural and Remote Nursing Generalist Framework Capabilities.

Who is the course for?

All health professionals who have completed a REC course (or equivalent) and want to learn about leadership and critical decision-making in remote Australia

Why do the course?

This course is designed for ‘All Health Professionals’ who have completed a REC course (or equivalent).

Building on what you learnt in the CRANAplus REC course, the AREC + ALS course is designed to help you apply safe, advanced assessment and management knowledge and skills to the care of the critically ill and injured in a remote setting.

It will help you analyse the signs of clinical deterioration to identify and manage the immediate care of the critically ill and injured in a remote setting.

What will you learn?

1. Manage the resuscitation of critically unwell people using ANZCOR guidelines in a low-resourced setting
2. Evaluate clinical data to guide treatment to prevent clinical deterioration in a high-acuity, low-resourced situation.
3. Integrate the technical and non-technical crisis resource management skills required to lead teams in remote emergency care
4. Critically reflect on the knowledge and skills required to provide culturally safe advanced emergency care in ahigh-acuityy, low-resourced situation.
