Advanced Newborn Life Support (ANLS)

Newborn resuscitation can occur unexpectedly in rural and remote settings. The Advanced Newborn Life Support (ANLS) course equips participants with the skills to initiate life support and provide ongoing stabilisation while awaiting specialist support or retrieval.

What is the course about?

Advanced Newborn Life Support prepares clinicians to recognise and respond to a newborn requiring support during the transition from fetal to extrauterine life, with a focus on rural and remote practice.

The course focuses on newborn resuscitation at birth and ongoing stabilisation while awaiting specialist support or retrieval in rural and remote settings. It includes teaching and simulation-based exposure to advanced interventions, including umbilical venous catheter (UVC) insertion, other vascular access techniques and emergency medication administration. This learning supports understanding and preparedness; course completion does not confer procedural credentialing or authorisation for independent practice. Clinical use must remain within the participant’s professional scope, organisational policies, local credentialing requirements and appropriate medical or retrieval guidance. Endotracheal intubation is outside the scope of this course.

Who is the course for?

Registered nurses, registered midwives and medical practitioners working in rural, remote or resource-limited settings who may be required to initiate newborn resuscitation and provide ongoing stabilisation.

Why do the course?

The ANLS course is designed to build practical skills and confidence to recognise when a newborn needs support, initiate effective resuscitation and provide ongoing stabilisation in rural and remote settings. Develop teamwork, communication and retrieval preparation skills, with simulation-based exposure to advanced interventions when specialist support is not immediately available.

  4. Oxygen and CPAP
  5. Chest compressions
  6. Advanced resuscitation including umbilical venous catheterisation
