The Midwifery Upskilling Course (MIDUS) provides midwives and medical officers in remote settings with updates on antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, including emergency management for mothers and newborns. Focused on safe, responsive, woman-centred care, this course strengthens clinical decision-making and confidence in complex maternity scenarios.

What is the course about?

The Midwifery Upskilling Course (MIDUS) is designed to support Midwives and Medical Officers who provide maternity care in remote and isolated settings. This course offers a comprehensive update on contemporary antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, while exploring complications in pregnancy and birth, and the emergency management of pregnant women and newborns.

With a strong emphasis on safe, responsive, woman-centred care, MIDUS enables participants to:

Compare routine and emergency maternity presentations

Practise evidence-based clinical decision-making

Reflect critically on emergency scenarios unique to remote contexts

Please note: This course is only open to qualified midwives and GPs with relevant obstetric experience. If you do not meet these criteria, we recommend enrolling in the Maternity Emergency Care course, which may be more suited to your scope of practice.

Why do the course?

The Mid­wifery Upskilling course (MIDUS) aims to pro­vide an overview of cur­rent prac­tice in ante­na­tal, intra­partum and post­na­tal care, includ­ing dis­cus­sion of com­pli­ca­tions in preg­nan­cy and birth, and the emer­gency man­age­ment of a preg­nant woman and her baby, with an empha­sis on care in the remote and iso­lat­ed setting.

CRANAplus encour­ages can­di­dates to apply the Mid­wifery Upskilling knowl­edge and skills learnt with­in the con­text of the poli­cies of the employ­ing health service.

What will you learn?

Apply evidence-based clinical decision making skills to routine and emergency maternity presentations in remote and isolated settings. Critically reflect on the knowledge and skills required to provide culturally safe emergency maternal and neonatal care in a remote setting.

The CRANAplus Midwifery Upskilling Course course consists of the following components.

Online pre-course materials and assessments that must be completed one week before the workshop.

Attendance at a two and a half day face-to-face workshop consisting of guided discussions, practical skill stations and context-based scenarios.

Two individual scenario based clinical skills assessments.
