Remote Emergency Care (REC)

The Remote Emergency Care (REC) course equips clinicians with the essential skills to deliver safe, effective initial care for critically injured patients in remote settings. Through realistic, scenario-based training, you’ll build confidence in managing emergencies, leading teams, and making critical decisions when resources are limited.

What is the course about?

The Remote Emergency Care (REC) course equips remote clinicians with the essential knowledge and industry-standard skills to deliver safe and effective initial care for critically injured individuals.

Through a structured, scenario-based approach, you’ll:

Tackle realistic emergencies designed to challenge your clinical thinking.

Develop confidence in managing clinical deterioration with limited resources.

Reflect on providing culturally safe, advanced emergency care in remote environments.

You’ll also explore key principles of crisis resource management, learning to lead and collaborate effectively in isolated settings under pressure.

Whether you’re new to emergency care in remote areas or looking to strengthen your response capabilities, REC prepares you for the realities of remote clinical practice. All content is aligned to the National Rural and Remote Nursing Generalist Framework Capabilities.

Who is the course for?

All health practitioners

Why do the course?

The REC course is designed to facilitate a personalised learning experience for the remote and isolated clinician (Nurses, Midwives, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Workers/Practitioners, Paramedics and Medical Officers) who may be required to provide emergency care to the critically ill or injured people

For many employers REC is a mandatory prerequisite to work in remote locations.

What will you learn?

1. Apply initial assessment and management knowledge and skills to the care of the seriously ill or injured in a remote setting
2. Identify actual or imminent life-threatening presentations using a systematic primary and secondary survey approach.
3. Critically reflect on the knowledge and skills required to provide culturally safe emergency care in a remote setting.
4. Construct accurate communication and documentation for a safe handover of care.
