Interactive Lecturing and Presenting

This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of 'interactive learning' as it applies to the planning of
lectures and presentations that engage audience members via interactivity between themselves and the lecturer/presenter. The workshop is specifically focused on planning sessions that address 'lecturalgia' (painful lecture), a condition that, according to McLaughlin and Mandin, "is a frequent cause of morbidity for both teachers and learners".
Although the workshop will use lectures as the focus, the principles apply equally to effective presentations.

Learning objectives:

  • Differentiate between active and passive learning.
  • Identify the critical importance of interactivity to active learning and effective lecturing.
  • Identify teaching strategies designed to promote interactivity and active learning in lecture settings.
  • Apply the interactive strategies to a lecture topic relevant to their individual teaching needs.
